REVISED AND EXPANDED SECOND EDITION

This book, first published in 1990, is considered the primary discography for 1960’s hot rod music, both instrumental and vocal.  The graphics in this second edition (labels, LP covers, etc.) are in FULL COLOR and the book includes an exhaustive index.  Forewords are provided by Davie Allan and the late Gary Usher.  This book has been described as “…An outstanding collection of photographs, record label reproductions, and descriptions of key groups…an exceptionally enjoyable browse. Essential for reference collections…but also recommended to all collections dealing with popular culture.”  Also, “…valuable to popular culture scholars, music fans, record collectors, and classic car enthusiasts.”

The book is intended as a companion volume to John Blair’s exhaustive “Illustrated Discography of Surf Music, 1961-1965”.

Co-author with John Blair of the updated hot rod music discography is Australia’s pre-eminent surf music historian and curator, Stephen J. McParland, who has written many books on the subject of surf music and related subjects since the late 1970s.  McParland is also Gary Usher’s official biographer, having written an incredibly detailed biography (at nearly 650 pages!!) of one of pop music’s most talented producer, musicians, and vocalists.

It has taken a long time for this SECOND EDITION to appear. The first edition of this book was published in 1990 and now, 26 years later, the fully updated (143+ pages) SECOND EDITION is finally available.

This is a discography of commercial sound recordings released between 1961 and 1965. Included are recordings about motorcycles, go-carts, dune buggies, etc..

Appendices to this edition include compilation and soundtrack albums; sound effects recordings; Hollywood movies about racing, hot rods, and bikers; and hot-rod recordings on the Billboard Top 100. The book also contains an exhaustive index.

The SECOND EDITION of “The Illustrated Discography of Hot Rod Music, 1961-1965” is a must have for all fans of HOT ROD and SURF music.

THE CANDIX STORY

Current status is ongoing with over 350 pages and hundreds of photos and graphics, many not seen before.

On-going problems in accessing various items to bring the book to a conclusion is the reason for the delay in publishing.

For all BEACH BOYS fans, the book contains over 50 pages detailing the birth of the group and the REAL events surrounding the band’s first single – Surfin b/w Luau on Candix.

Many of these facts will be making their appearance for the FIRST time and will change the current perception surrounding the birth of the group.

Likewise, full in-depth stories on THE FROGMEN – the label’s ONLY national Top 40 hit group – and the Scott Engel (Scott Walker of The Walker Brothers) contrived MOONGOONERS are also featured, while hitherto unknown information on many facets of the label, the various individuals involved and the artists themselves will be found in the completed tome.

It has been 54 years since the label closed its doors with most, if not all, of the principals involved now no longer with us.

Stay stuned …

THE BEACH BOYS 1961-1963: INCEPTION AND CONCEPTION

“FROM HITE MORGAN TO NICK VENET”

UNPUBLISHED AS A HARD COPY

158 PAGES

As is evident by FOURTH EDITION, this is the fourth time this book has been made available. This new edition includes an extra 2 pages (than EDITION THREE) which contain a wealth of new information and graphics not previously available anywhere else.

In this FOURTH EDITION you will find the story of the birth of the Beach Boys and the answers to many questions, plus revelations that will change the established and accepted early history of the group.

Were The Beach Boys ever called The Pendletons/Pendletones?

What was the name of the group when they went to Candix Records?

Which was first: X-301, Candix 301 or Candix 331?

What has Richie Podolor to do with the Beach Boys?

Did Nick Venet really produce the Beach Boys?

Why did Alan Jardine leave the Beach Boys and then rejoin the group?

Were Alan Jardine and David Marks in the Beach Boys at the same time?

Were Danny Hamilton, Paul Johnson and Gary Usher ever earmarked as members of the Beach Boys?

Where were the September and October 1961 and February 1962 recording sessions undertaken by the band recorded? At the Morgan’s Mayberry Street studio, the Morgan’s Melrose Avenue studio and/or World Pacific’s studio?

When was the Surfin’ b/w Luau single really released?

Where did the CAN part of Candix REALLY come from; Candix Enterprises, Inc. being the first record label to release a Beach Boys single?

Was there to be a follow-up “Beach Boys” single on Candix?

Or was it to be on Joe Saraceno’s Union record label?

Answers to these questions and more will be found in THE BEACH BOYS 1961-1963: INCEPTION & CONCEPTION.

For the first time, the truth behind the birth of the Beach Boys will be revealed, largely by those who WERE THERE.

Since its publication in 2011, this book has become the benchmark for all other books pertaining to the Beach Boys, and the basis for more recently published books on the band.

You will not find any regurgitated “facts” in this book, only what really happened based on FACTUAL DETAILS.

Includes 14 pages of photos (11 in colour), a full colour front and back cover, a DISCOGRAPHY, BIBLIOGRAPHY, NOTES & REFERENCES (containing additional color graphics, photos, over 60 record labels, plus record album covers, etc), plus a thorough INDEX.

THE CANDIX STORY – update –

The book is still progressing slowly. Well, in fact, it is written, but I am still adding bits and pieces, making corrections and still trying to figure out certain events, etc.

In fact, writing this book is like turning over a rock. You simply do not know know what you will find!

I have nonetheless been able to quash a number of misconceptions about the label, in particular the derivation of the name C-A-N-D-I-X.

At this point, ALL the published FACTS and THEORIES of how the name was conceived have been proved wrong!

Progress on the book has also been slow due to the fact that record singles needed to clarify certain facts and events have been extremely hard to find – and these have NOT been Candix singles!!! Unfortunately, the book will NOT be available until these are located and documented.

As I state in the book’s introduction, the book is just not about Candix, but is in fact about all those involved with the label, from staff to artists to associates. This aspect of the book has provided the more interesting facts and by including this information, THE CANDIX STORY takes on an entirely new dimension.

CANDIX RECORDS

Yes, I know the company was called CANDIX Enterprises, Inc.

So what was the “Enterprises” all about?

THE CANDIX STORY: HOLLYWOOD HITS AND MISSES – the book (now over 250 pages with hundreds of photos) is still progressing slowly. LOTS of NEW interesting facts have come to light ….
